You're Hot: You're Hired

#1. You're Hot: You're Hired

You're Hot: You're Hired

You may be one the of millions of Americans who periodically sit down to clear your mind and blow an hour or two watching some ridiculous reality show wherein contestants are eliminated one by one until only one narcissistic candidate remains. The next time you do so, pay attentiveness to the "professions" of the contestants. truly there will be more than one ridiculously tantalizing young man or young woman who lists their work as medical or pharmaceutical sales. Why do the drug and medical tool business recruit these young hotties? It is simple, because doctors are a cash cow, cash cows that are more truly milked by beautiful farmhands.

You're Hot: You're Hired

The unsavory ties in the middle of manufacturers and doctors have existed for decades, but have been exacerbated by the proliferation of Hmos. If a firm is able to fetch a contrat with say, Kaiser Permanente, to carry it's statin rather than a competitor's statin, the rewards are enormous. If an tool builder can convince doctors to hire its devices, the revenues can run into the several billions of dollars. Moreover, nearly each of the medical specialties has formed a "society" wherein its members routinely fetch in large argument rooms and custom facilities to hear lectures and panels on the most cutting edge treatments and procedures. Never absent from these gatherings are the medical and pharmaceutical sales teams. Sales teams set up expound booths and displays, sometimes running into the tens of thousands of quadrilateral feet each. They will even leave you a gift on your nightstand, stylish by a payment to the society's coffers. While still other sales staff are sent to meet with doctors individually at their offices. No stone is left un-turned. There is great recompense for the sales staff, many manufacture six shape salaries and commissions.

While some universities and hospitals have banned their physicians from accepting promotional materials or speaking on behalf of specific drugs or equipment, the medical societies of the specialties have not. Surprisingly, the societies themselves sell the manufacturers direct way to their members, at a stiff cost. In some cases, more than half of a society's revenues come directly from drug business and tool makers.

The effects of this financial work on on doctors comes at the price of the patient. Patients may not have discounted way to a particular drug-even if the drug is more effective-under their medical plan if the plan has contracted with other builder of a similar drug. Patients are prescribed drugs that they don't need and asked to buy or are in case, granted with tool that they don't require. One study from the Journal of the American medical association found that more than one in five patients who received cardiac defibrillators did not meet the medical criteria for receiving them. Large drug makers and tool makers have paid millions in settlements in civil cases tantalizing allegations of improper kickbacks to doctors and medical societies.

At this time petite attentiveness is being shown to the drug manufacturers' and tool makers' magnificent minions trolling your doctor's offices and grifting the groups he or she is a member of. It is time that more effort is spent on lobbying representatives to pass legislation ending this inevitable friction of interest for the sake of patients. No association is more necessary than that of the doctor and patient, and there can be no space permitted for cash over competent care.

How to Know all things About Your Body

I will admit it - sometimes I hate exercising. When the alarm goes off, I'd much rather hit the snooze button than hit the chilly pavement for a jog nearby the park.

How to Know all things About Your Body

But guess what: I've never regretted a run. Not one. And I bet you can't think of one time you were ever disappointed after a walk, a yoga class, or a weight - lifting session at the gym - even if you had to force yourself to do it.

8 Fat-Fighting Foods

1. Green & Oolong Teas

Catechins found in these teas can boost the body's fat-burning fire. One study of Japanese women compared the effects of drinking green tea, oolong tea, or water on varied days. Just one largre cup of oolong tea increased calorie burning by up to 10%, a boost that 1 1/2 hours later. Green tea raised metabolism by 4% for 1 1/2 hours. Other studues show that drinking two to four cups daily ( about 375 to 675 mg of catechins) may translate into an extra 50 calories burned each day - about 5 pounds worth in a year.

2. Flaxseed

Flaxseed is rich in fiber and healthy fats, which help stabilize blood sugar, leaving you less likely to bringe. Some research suggests flax can also help soothe symtoms of hormone swings because it's high in plant estrogens. Sprinkle ground seeds over cereals, soups, or salads; add them to smoothies; or substitute 1 cup of ground flaxsees for 1/3 cup canola, corn. Or other oil or shortening in muffins and cookies.

If you want to burn fat, spice things things up. In a study of 36 men and women, Australian researchers found that following a spicy meal, levels of insulin - the hormone that triggers body fat storehouse - were lowered by as mmuch as 32%. Just 3 ounces of salmon delovers 530 Iu of vitamin D and 181 mg of calcium, a power-packed nutritional combination that may be just what your waistline needs as you get older. Other research shows that without adequate vitamon D, our appetite-regulating hormone leptin can't do its job.

7. Walnuts

Instead of snacking on some chips, open up a bag of nuts: Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may keep you feeling fuller longer. In a 1-year study of population with diabetes who were following a low-fat diet, Australian researches discovered that those who consumed 8 to 10 walnuts a day lost more weight and body fat. The subjects also reduced their insulin levels, which helps keep fat storehouse in check.

8. Yogurt

Packed with filling protein, yogurt also supplies the body with much-needed calcium. ''There is evidence that calcium deficiency, which is base in many women, may slow metabolism'' says Tammy Lakotas, Rd, coauthor of Fire Up Your Metabolism someone else plus: research shos that inspiring calcium through low-fat or fat-free dairy foods may sacrifice fat absorption from other foods.

5 reasons you overeat and how to stop.

Drinking Red Wine related With Reduced Lung Cancer Risk in Male Smokers

In the October, 2008 issue of the American association for Cancer investigate journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention¸ California Kaiser Permanente researchers article yet other advantage linked with drinking red wine: a lower risk of lung cancer.

Drinking Red Wine related With Reduced Lung Cancer Risk in Male Smokers

Chun Chao, PhD, of Kaiser Permanente's division of investigate and estimation in Pasadena, California, and colleagues analyzed data from the California Men's health Study of 84,170 men aged 45 to 69. Surveys completed in the middle of 2000 and 2003 provided information with regard to demographics and lifestyle characteristics, together with type and frequency of alcoholic beverage consumption. Over the three year period, 210 cases of lung cancer were identified.

Among men who reported ever having smoked, drinking one or more glasses of red wine per day was linked with a 61 percent lower adjusted risk of lung cancer compared to the risk experienced by those who did not consume red wine. For each glass of red wine consumed per month, a 2 percent discount in lung cancer risk was noted among those who had ever smoked, and for those who reported having been heavy smokers, a 4 percent discount was observed. No ensue for beer, liquor, or white wine was observed.

"An antioxidant component in red wine may be protective of lung cancer, particularly among smokers," Dr Chao stated. "Red wine is known to contain high levels of antioxidants. There is a composition called resveratrol that is very rich in red wine because it is derived from the grape skin. This composition has shown essential health benefits in preclinical studies."

Although white wine also contains useful phytochemicals, their level and action are much lower compared with those found in red wine. The authors witness that resveratrol, found in red wine, red grapes, and other plants, has been shown to alter the activation of carcinogenic substances in human lung cell cultures, induce programmed cell death in human lung cancer cell lines, and slow lung tumor increase in experiments with mice.

"This finding, if confirmed is of interest for lung cancer chemoprevention in current and previous smokers," the authors write. They emphasize that not smoking is still the best way to avoid lung cancer, and that heavy alcohol consumption is not recommended.

Pen to Paper to Peel Off the Pounds!

#1. Pen to Paper to Peel Off the Pounds!

Pen to Paper to Peel Off the Pounds!

The first thing that I insist upon for each and every one of my clients is to keep an open mind and upbeat attitude. The next step towards a healthier lifestyle is to assert a detailed food journal. Just as person might keep a "personal goal journal" or "daily blessing journal", the all prominent food journal should include the foods you eat along with the time you are eating. Feelings and thoughts about food as well as being able to rate your degree of hunger should be included in a well understanding out food journal. It would be so much easier to contribute my clients with a pre-written calendar like diary, together with days of the week and a space for each meal and snack. But that doesn't work because it is not individually created and reflective of what a person is eating and feeling. On introductory assessment, a form is just exquisite because the basic details of one's dietary habits can be initially evaluated. But when one "creates" her own food journal (with advice of what needs to be included by a condition care professional), together with definite comments on eating behaviors, timing of meals and even blood sugar readings it becomes personal. Eating is very personal. Everybody is an individual. And that is why food counseling based on definite dietary needs works and " normal pre-printed diets" don't. Food journals will identify nutritional issues as well as emotional and behavioral responses to daily situations.

Pen to Paper to Peel Off the Pounds!

If you write it, you own it. If you write down what you eat, you will associate your food and rehearsal program. At least initially, basic portion sizes and tiny bites have to be included. (100 fat here and 50 fat there still count). If you have diabetes, writing down your food and connecting it with your blood sugar response is the only way to see if your diabetes care plan (food, rehearsal and medications) is working for you. Requiring clients to keep a food journal allows them to see what they are absolutely eating. "Had a bad day" is not a visible food record. absolutely recording your food is a way to document what you are doing and why you are doing it. Population who keep food journals significantly heighten their chances of losing weight and more importantly have an increased chance of holding the weight off long term. And for many, that is the extreme goal!

If you have a blood sugar issue and you report what you are eating and when you are eating it, you will ultimately be able to identify which foods and how much carbohydrate cause an increase in blood sugar levels. Reviewing the food journal with your registered dietitian can help pinpoint why you are not losing weight or why your blood sugar levels are high in the morning or why you are starving in the mid afternoon. According to a study done in 2008 (by Kaiser Permanente's town for condition Research, funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood originate at the National Institutes of Health) of about 1700 Population showed that those who kept a detailed food journal of what they ate and drank for six days a week lost twice as much weight as those who did not keep a food record. Wow!

If you have been defiant to writing down your food, think how interesting it would be to rate what you eat and why you are eating it. It's time to learn how to turn your habits. Writing down what you eat, when you eat it and how you feel about your food is an incredibly prominent tool in enhancing your thorough nutritional health. Stop fighting and start writing!

I Have complicated Regional Pain Syndrome? What is it?

#1. I Have complicated Regional Pain Syndrome? What is it?

I Have complicated Regional Pain Syndrome? What is it?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (Crps)-ever hear of it? It's more base than one might think. I hadn't until I was diagnosed with it. And the whole thing started with breaking my foot!

I Have complicated Regional Pain Syndrome? What is it?

Crps, the cause is unknown, but may be associated to a question curious the sympathetic nervous system. This principles is settled along the spinal cord, controls confident corporeal functions-most notably the occasion and conclusion of the blood vessels and sweat glands.

It's known as some other names: Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (Rsds), causalgia, Sudeck's atrophy and shoulder-hand syndrome. Although it also hits the feet, as it has done with me.

The syndrome occurs as a supervene of injury to nerves, bones, joints-occasionally muscles, ligaments or tendons. It can arise from whatever from something as minor as a sprain or, as in my case, a join of broken bones. In about 25% of sufferers, there is no cause at all.

What are its symptoms? How is it diagnosed and treated? Is it curable?
These questions were swimming in my head. Here are the answers as relayed to me by my rheumatologist, Dr. Randy Lehmer, Head of Rheumatology for Kaiser-Permanente Orange County, along with information gathered from the Arthritis Foundation and WebMd.com:

The procedure of Crps has 3 overlapping stages:
Stage 1, the affected area is painful, tender and swells. There are changes in skin color (flesh tone to purple, in my case), sweating, abnormal hair and nail growth and stiffness.

Stage 2, persistent aching/burning/numbness and tingling-sometimes all at the same time! Changes in room/weather temperature, breezes, air-conditioning or even texture changes and movement from garments. Nails come to be brittle, skin may look waxy. X-rays will show thinning of the bones. Pain starts to spread and muscle spasms start occurring. This is presently where I am.

Stage 3, Permanent changes may form if the sick person doesn't get help. Joint and limb function are reduced.

According to Dr. Lehmer, my foray into this syndrome probably happened due to the fact that I also have rheumatoid arthritis, although it was not the cause of the accident. Because my foot had to be in a non-weight bearing cast for over two months, the nerve endings decided that this wasn't what they idea should happen in my body and, basically, took over.

Turns out early detection is best (as with most syndromes) for any possibility for unblemished recovery. I had been complaining to the orthopedic in fee of my foot, but he assumed (wrongly) that I just needed to keep working at getting my mobility back.

After 6 months I was still having muscle spasms throughout the day and night, pain in the area, paralysis and what felt like hot oil running down my leg from my knee down.

I mentioned all this to Dr. Lehmer at one of my regular appointments with him-he took me seriously. He ordered up a bone flow scan, new x-rays and consulted with the head podiatrist. Then he sent me direct to corporeal Therapy. I was also put on a month-long procedure of prednisone and told not to feel the pain, as that could absolutely slow down the salvage time. If there was to be one. He hoped that I would once again be power walking, but when he was unsure.

Turns out Crps is not curable. With early intervention and proper care the chances of it being permanent may lessen, but not necessarily will it preclude it from worsening. It seems to be a "play it by ear" type of problem.

Some citizen recovery, some citizen do not.

How are most cases treated? corporeal therapy, pain killers, numbing agents (anything from local anesthetic to epidurals), muscle relaxants, short-term steroid use. Some severe cases might use transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (Tens) unit or biofeedback. Tens is a small, battery-operated gismo that can ease pain by blocking nerve impulses.

The most leading thing with this syndrome seems to be early analysis and getting treatment, which may also be the most difficult part. Take the medications and do the exercises that have been prescribed, religiously. It may not be curable, but there is a great deal that can be done to help to help those who suffer with it to live more comfortably and, in turn, be able to lead active fulfilling lives.

Lpn to Rn - What You Need to Know

Many Lpns (Licensed practical nurses) have a desire to expand their careers in the nursing field by becoming Rns (Registered Nurses) - so they therefore enrol in Lpn to Rn programs. Rns are able to command a higher wage than Lpns, and have more opportunities for advancement thanks to their great credentials and higher knowledge base.

Lpn to Rn - What You Need to Know

Lpn to Rn Information

What is an Lpn to Rn Program?

An Lpn to Rn schedule is a schedule which licensed practical nurses undertake to become Rns. These programs are designed to help Lpns expand their careers by added improving the existing expertise and knowledge they already posses. After completing a schedule at an accredited institution, many nurses have a much easier time looking a well paying Rn job.

Online Vs Campus Based Learning

While many brick and mortar institutions offer this bridge program, online programs are also available. Online programs tend to be an perfect option for nurses who prefer not to stop working as an Lpn as they work towards obtaining their Rn degree. It is also a very beloved option for nurses with house commitments. An online schedule offers students the same level of study they would receive at a campus based program, but with assignments and studying taking place online.

However, keep in mind that while most of the work can be completed online, the hours spent in a clinical setting still need to be completed in man to ensure the trainee gets the hands-on sense that is required.

Whether a nurse decides to enrol in an online or campus based program, the Nclex-Rn still needs to be taken and passed. This is to prove that the nurse in demand possesses the relevant skills and knowledge needed to furnish a safe and productive level of nursing care.

How Long Does the schedule Take?

This kind of bridge schedule typically takes two years to complete. However, it may take a shorter estimate of time if a nurse has prior credit, or if the school allows him/her to test out of definite courses and subjects. It may take a longer estimate of time if a nurse decides to work towards obtaining their degree on a part-time basis, i.e. Attending classes part time.

Is Any Financial Aid Available?

Any trainee looking for financial aid should fill out the Fafsa form to see if they qualify. Students who can prove they need financial aid may be able to gain help from the schools they plan to enrol in. Many scholarships and college grants are also available. However, many of these scholarships are targeted towards minorities concerned in becoming an Rn, such as:

-The Kaiser Permanente College to Caring Program

-The Minority Nurse Magazine Scholarship Program

-The National association of Hispanic Nurses Scholarship

Other options comprise the Sgna Rn normal study Scholarship, the Aaohn Foundation academic Scholarship, and the Scholarships of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

What is the mean wage of an Rn?

As mentioned, Rns are able to command a higher wage than Lpns. Salaries are based on location, study level, the healthcare organization and experience, but the wage tends to be in the middle of ,000 and ,000. It is actually not unheard of for some Rns to make ,000 or more, but this is ordinarily thanks to the industrialized expertise and sense a nurse may have.

With the higher wage and more opportunities for occupation advancement an Lpn to Rn schedule brings, it is clear to see why the estimate of nurses enrolling in this type of bridge schedule has surged in modern years.

Healthcare Reform Changes health assurance in California

California condition insurance Giant Aided by condition insurance Reform

Healthcare Reform Changes health assurance in California

According to the Director of the Office of supervision and Budget, Peter Orszag, the historic condition insurance reform provides the most deficit discount of any bill in the past decade. It's estimated to cut the deficit by more than 0 billion over the first decade, and by trillion in the following decade.

The condition insurance reform bill includes help for major condition insurance fellowships and doctor-owned hospitals. That includes help for the giant California-based insurance enterprise Kaiser Permanente, according to congressional aides and lobbyists.

The newest changes to the 153-page condition insurance reform bill comprise a provision that tax-exempt insurers would have to pay a new fee levied on insurers on only half of their premiums. Kaiser Permanente is one of these tax-exempt insurers.

California condition insurance Reform and Medicare

The bill also extends an August 1st deadline on new doctor-owned hospitals to apply to the government for eligibility to be paid for Medicare patients until the end of 2010.

According to a 2003 article by the Kaiser family Foundation, 40.2 million Americans were enrolled in Medicare. That was 14 percent of the U.S. Population. California had the largest enrollment of any state with 4.1 million Medicare beneficiaries, or 11 percent of the state's population.

California Representative Tackles Tobacco Industry

While the media focused on the condition insurance reform debate, the family Smoking stoppage and Tobacco control Act was signed into law by President Obama on June 22, 2009.

By all accounts, it is the strongest part to protect children from the dangers of smoking to date. Why does this law focus on children? roughly 90 percent of all smokers began at or before their 18th birthday. We've known about this for decades, but the tobacco business has used special-interest lobbying to manipulate Congress.

Blatant refusal to accept responsibility for the sicknesses caused by cigarettes was exposed as recently as 1994 when Rep. Henry Waxman first brought tobacco Ceos before Congress. Waxman has represented the 30th congressional district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1975, and has called cigarettes the singular most perilous consumer product ever sold.

Before Congress, these Ceos still denied that tobacco was deadly, that nicotine was addictive, and that they marketed to children. In reality, tobacco fellowships aggressively target children, and sell products with flavorings to mask the taste of tobacco and make it more tempting.

Healthcare Reform Has inherent to Help Millions

More than 400,000 Americans die of tobacco-related illnesses each year, and more than 8 million of us suffer from at least one serious illness caused by smoking. While you've probably heard that second-hand smoke can kill, third-hand smoke that is trapped in carpet, fabric, furniture, hair, skin, and toys also exposes you to toxic chemicals like arsenic and lead. Babies take in 20 times more third-hand smoke than adults because they breathe faster, and spend more time near the floor.

The family Smoking stoppage and Tobacco control Act is a victory for condition care reform because it will cut the billions of dollars we spend on tobacco-related condition care costs in this country. It is intended to cut the whole of children who start smoking, and to save American lives and make us healthier.

This Act bans tobacco advertising within a thousand feet of playgrounds and schools. It also curbs the quality of tobacco fellowships to market products to children by using captivating flavors. It military tobacco fellowships to more clearly and publicly write back the deadly effects of their products, and allows Fda scientists to take other common-sense steps to cut the dangers of smoking.

While fewer beneficiaries will be in plans with zero prime in 2010 compared to 2009 (a decline of 7 percent), a plan with no prime does not necessarily recite the best value. Out-of-pocket costs are affected by a aggregate of premiums, covered benefits and cost-sharing requirements.

Texas Women Are Drinkers - They May Also Be At Higher Risk for Breast Cancer

Texas Women Are Drinkers - They May Also Be At Higher Risk for Breast Cancer

Texas women may be at higher risk for breast cancer, according to up-to-date studies. Lead researcher Dr. Yan Li, an Oakland, California oncologist at Kaiser Permanente, and colleagues discovered that three or more alcoholic beverages a day -- whatever the form -- increase risk of the disease by thirty percent. Inspecting that the Texas group of State condition Services classifies an breathtaking ninety-six percent of women in Texas as moderate drinkers, our Lone Star ladies may be particularly vulnerable.

Texas Women Are Drinkers - They May Also Be At Higher Risk for Breast Cancer

Adding to the high-risk cocktail, however, is lack of condition insurance. The Texas condition organize considers lack of condition coverage to be a risk factor for breast cancer, probably due to poor screening and decreased access to care. Twenty-five percent of Texans are currently living without any condition guarnatee whatsoever -- the worst rate in the nation -- and that doesn't include those who are naturally underinsured.

The study evaluated the midpoint daily alcohol consumption of over 70,000 women, all of whom were members of the Kaiser Permanente Hmo, and had received condition exams while the 1978 - 1985 period. By 2004, 2,800 participants had heard the dreadful news: "You have breast cancer." Arthur Klatsky, an analyst at the Kaiser Permanente group of research in Oakland, reported the full extent of the study's findings on the twenty-seventh of the month at the European Cancer consulation in Barcelona, Spain.

Previous studies have found a link in the middle of breast cancer and alcohol. The basic ideas (or at least one of them) is that alcohol increases estrogen production, and any consistent increase in that hormone also raises the risk of distinct diseases, including breast cancer. What wasn't known, however, was either or not the form of alcohol mattered. Did it make a difference if women drank wine, beer, or spirits? Evidently it didn't.

A ten percent risk increase was associated with women who drank in the middle of one and two alcoholic beverages a day on average, as compared to light drinkers (who drank less than one a day). As alcohol consumption increased, so did the likelihood of being diagnosed with the disease. "The risk of breast cancer increased by thirty percent in women who drank three or more drinks per day," as compared with light drinkers, said Li.

Li went on to explain that all women start with a baseline risk. That "baseline" is dissimilar for each private and dependent on a compound of variables, including weight, lifestyle, family history, and genetics, among others. The midpoint woman in the United States has a one in eight chance of getting the disease. The likelihood of that increases as risk factors increase. No matter where a woman starts on that scale, however, the probability of being diagnosed with breast cancer raises consistently as alcohol consumption increases."...if you drink three or more drinks a day, that risk -- rather than being one in eight -- will be one in six [for the midpoint American woman]," said Li.

Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among Texas women. The disease disproportionately affects minorities, poor, and uninsured women. Fewer African-Americans are diagnosed with it, yet they are at substantially higher risk of dying from the disease, perhaps due to lack of care. Other risk factors include obesity -- also a qoute in Texas, with more than sixty-two percent of adults either overweight or obese in 2006 - genetics, family history, and lifestyle.

The Texas Breast and Cervical Cancer Services schedule (Bccs) offers clinical breast and pelvic exams, mammograms, and Pap tests at more than two hundred sites over the state, including in Dallas, Houston, and Austin. The services are presented at no cost for eligible, uninsured women, which may come as a great relief to the twenty-five percent of men and women who are left uninsured in the state. Their goal is to decrease mortality rates for both breast and cervical cancers straight through allowable screening. For regions with such high risks of the diseases, these screenings could be pivotal in years to come.

But wait a minute. Is whatever else confused? Why is the risk so much higher with any type of alcohol? This is the last thing Texas women need. "I belief red wine was actually good for me," we say. Well, dissimilar studies on dissimilar diseases yield dissimilar results. Previous research has associated the antioxidant flavonoids in red wine with heart-protective qualities, especially resveratrol, which is at particularly high concentrations in Cabernet Sauvignon. Coral Lamartiniere, professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, published a study just this August in Carcinogenesis claiming that animals fed resveratrol showed an eighty-seven percent decrease in prostate tumors. When asked about Li's findings, however, Lamartiniere commented, "...the alcohol is obviously a more potent carcinogen than resveratrol is protective against cancer."

Perhaps we should explain this as most curative professionals do: Don't go overboard with anything. Just because one substance may lower the risk of a distinct disease doesn't mean it won't increase the risk of others. "Moderation in all things" is a saying so antique that most of us don't know or care where it came from, but somehow, someway, it practically all the time proves true. Li warned that to sacrifice total risk for breast cancer, women should lead a salutary lifestyle, including practicing good eating and practice habits, not smoking, and not drinking heavily. "Modest consumption of whatever is the way to go," she said.
